Never Let Me Go (2010)
Watch Number Three!
Prompt: A Dystopian Film
Never Let Me Go (2010) - Mark Romanek
Seriously a very good film. Let's start with a synopsis (no spoilers). We follow the lives of three people, as they fulfill the role society has given them. We start with them at Hailsham, a boarding school, follow them to the cottages, and finally the final sequence of their lives. At Hailsham they are expected to stay in perfect health while performing well in sports and showing creativity in art. At the age of 18 they are transported to the cottages where they get a taste of life outside of Hailsham.
Based off the book by Kazuo Ishiguro, the movie is profound. Or at least a little. So many miscommunications or just people being straight up dicks I was practically yelling at my screen. And I wasn't very satisfied with the ending. I was hoping they would find some way to fight their fates (that are learned about 20 minutes into the movie so,,, not really a spoiler).
This is a dystopia because it is in an alternate reality that did not follow the ethics of scientific study that we have in place, and in turn bettered their society. Only for a certain group of people though. Many others die young.
Now on to the bones of the film, thee aesthetics were amazing. They fit really well with each sequence. Some of the other bits, such as camera and costuming left me wanting more. However, they achieved what they needed to achieve for the purpose of the film. And like I said, the aesthetic was there.
Not much else to say,,, I promise I'll get better at these.
4/5 Stars!
